The Power of Using the Right Words

Bud sent me this bit of weepy nonsense – I usually just delete this crap.

I pass this one on because the originator [not Bud] wanted us to understand how deserving the beggar is and how just the right communication skills would right the world for this man.  [I absolutely love it that our hero never gives the bum a cent.  Is she a do-gooder or a cynical pro helping a scammer do it right?]

We are to understand that the solution to any need is a handout and that the only thing in the way is hard hearted hedonists like me.  The guy should have a puppy in his lap.

Everything today is propaganda/marketing/spin.  No more decisions based on merit.  We are suckers for the undocumented anecdote – the rhetorical sleight of hand.

Listen to the President on any given policy.  He never argues the merits, and he always brings in an anecdote that is aimed at eliciting our sympathy and diverting our attention from core problems.

Are fully disabled people in America generally needy?  Is public begging ok?  Is this guy actually blind?  If he’s helpless, how did he get here;  how will he get home?  Are all poor blind people beggars;  why not?  If he’s both blind and needy, will giving this beggar money help him?

If we wanted to help, is clever sentimentalizing and suggestions of helplessness the best approach?  Suckers.
