The Scary Rise of Libertarianism

If we were to put governing philosophies on a clock face, we could make 6:00 the nation’s political center.  As we move away from the center either left or right – we would see less pragmatism and more ideology until we reached the lunatic fringes on both sides which ultimately meet again at 12:00.

As we move left from the center we might find liberals, Democrats, progressives, socialists, communists and finally anarchists at midnight.  Moving right from the center, we might find conservatives, Republicans, capitalists, monarchists, theocrats and finally libertarians at midnight.

In this column, Krauthammer gives credit to Ron Paul for taking a truly unworkable set of ideas and moving them from the lunatic fringe into the mainstream of today’s Republican Party.  It’s a well written piece about a notable event – worth your time.

Ron Paul’s achievement
By Charles Krauthammer, January 12
Washington Post

The one problem I have with this column is that Krauthammer seems comfortable with Paul’s achievement – it scares the hell out of me.  It might be good to have some right wing crazies to balance the tree hugger and do-gooder lunatics on the other side but I’d be far more comfortable with the center retaking our politics from these people and drumming them out of the mainstream Parties altogether.
