Who Remembers George Gobel?

This is from Paul and it takes me back.  Watch this;  it’s short and a big laugh.

Are the old comics from my time funnier than modern comedians?  Sometimes we think so but most times we realize that we just remember the best parts?  The above clip is artfully edited by Carson from the original 9 minutes in 1969, down to less than 3 minutes for a much later Carson show.  You can watch the unedited clip here.

It’s a lot easier to be silly with a few pops under your belt.  Can you imagine drunken celebrities, smoking cigarettes on TV today?  It’s probably illegal – the cigarettes almost certainly are.  Are people healthier today?  Happier/better off?  Frankly, I doubt it – it’s not as though those comics didn’t know that smoking and booze would kill you.

I think the bottom line is likely to be that things are neither better nor worse – just different.  It’s probably always been that way and always will be.  Luckily, it’s true that we can’t go back because going back would be stupid.
