Herman Cain: “You are NOT da Man”

I keep hearing from otherwise sensible people that Herman Cain “is the man.”  Please.

Cain is great for Republicans – for the moment.  It is always good for America to see a black man who is not caught up in progressivism but this very nice, well spoken and intelligent business man is way out of his depth and his 15 minutes are about up.  Except for Obama fans, we should all hope that this guy goes away before he self-destructs like the Trump, Bachman, Palin and Perry camps before him.

This man is not qualified to be President and we’ve had enough of the unqualified.  He’s never been a real CEO, just CEO of a division of a big company – think Jimmy Carter and think affirmative action.  The nation’s problems are fathoms deep and miles wide;  Cain has a depth and breadth we can measure with a ruler.

9-9-9 is bumper sticker policy making that is quickly being debunked.  If this is all he knows about economics, even Barack Obama could destroy him one on one.  The program is an unfinished outline but even at that level, it’s unworkable and not passable.  Aside from being regressive, here are a few key flaws:

·         The plan would reduce federal revenue by hundreds of billions a year, deepening deficits and debt.

·         It eliminates payroll taxes when entitlements are $40 trillion in the hole.

·         The tax system reforms would eliminate all deductions – except for the deductions Cain plans to keep or create in his “empowerment zones”.  Just how is that any different from today?

·         The plan is intended to move us incrementally to the completely rejected “Fair Tax” scheme where we will all be paying a consumption tax to the feds of 25% or more – probably far more.

·         Cain has no economists behind his plan.  A man who wants to be President should already have gathered experts around him to verify his ideas – think Sarah Palin.  9-9-9 was developed by Rich Lowrie who is an investment advisor and accountant.

While you’re remembering Palin, think about this man’s probable depth on foreign policy, health care, energy, climate science and all the other issues facing the nation.

This guy should get out soon and throw his support to Romney while he still has a shred of credibility with the center of the nation.  If he wants to run, he can spend Romney’s terms getting prepared and building a staff.

No.  He cannot be Vice President either – Palin, Palin, Palin, Dan Quayle.  [At the moment, I favor Pawlenty for that job.]

It’s time for the replace-Obama folks to get serious.  Please, plan to vote in the Republican primary.
