Hamas never stops firing rockets into Israel – only the number and lethality changes. 130 various munitions were fired into Israel in the last three days. But Thursday, Hamas happily claimed responsibility for firing a Russian build, laser guided antitank missile at a school bus.
Missile from Gaza Hits School Bus by Isabel Kershner NYT, April 7, 2011
I may have been wrong for a long time: these are not savages, these are animals.
Hamas said it had specifically aimed at the children as a response to Israel’s killing of three Hamas commanders last Saturday.
Is this ok with anybody? Understandable? Excusable?
Israel responded with aerial, artillery and tank fire against targets in Gaza that killed 18 Palestinians, 10 of whom were militants and the rest civilians, according to officials in Gaza.
Do you believe anything Hamas officials say about casualties? A few years ago, these terrorists would have claimed that only civilians were killed, that only women and children were targeted and killed and they would have paraded willing journalists to various sites in order to view the mangled and bloody bodies.
Who is responsible for rockets being fired from places populated with civilians?
What kind of person pursues political objectives by orchestrating the deaths of his own people – the more the better?
If I choose to keep my family close to a mortar site or ammunition dump in order to protect the site or support military action, am I a civilian? What kind of person risks the life of a child?
I do not understand any American who can justify these constant rocket attacks and the deliberate targeting of children. We would never tolerate such things.
Some idiot progressives want us to understand that there is no war there, therefore Hamas and other terrorist attacks are criminal acts and it is not justifiable to even risk harm to civilians in pursuit of criminals. It is somehow ok for one side to murder civilians in the largest numbers they can achieve but the other side must negotiate and turn the other cheek.
Does that really make sense to anyone?
The Hamas guys and Hezbollah and the Arafat PLO murderers before them are waging war and always have been. The goal is the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people there. It is not as though the bad guys are keeping their intentions a secret.
The 9M133 Kornet is a second generation anti-tank weapon manufactured by the Russian government intended to deal with main battle tanks and helicopters. It is laser guided – so you know what you are planning to destroy – and has a range of 3 miles.
Does anyone think that Hamas has the money to buy such weapons?
Is there any doubt what nation is supplying them? Does anyone think that Iran intends these weapons to be defensive as opposed to offensive?
What would we do if a powerful enemy nation was arming a small neighbor nation of ours? Remember the Soviets and Cuba?
Ordinary folks understand that the Israelis are under attack – that state sponsored terrorism is an act of war. Inexplicably, the world manages to look at Israeli actions during British rule and/or any number of Israeli reactions to suicide bombings, kidnappings and rockets as fundamental causation.
Americans who think that way are delusional if not twisted.
That governments pretend to think that way is politics. Middle Eastern dictatorships and EU nations with large Muslim populations need Muslims to be angry at Israel and the US in order to keep order at home.
As I’ve said many times, there are only two nations that want peace in Palestine – Israel and America. There may be a few “neutral” nations who just stay out of it but most nations are happy to see America on the hook and are advantaged by continuing trouble there.
This is of growing importance because some see imminent UN recognition of Palestine as a state. That move would hurt everyone and probably generate a war. The idea is that Israel was arbitrarily established therefore the UN can now resolve the dispute and set the legal boundaries of the two nations without negotiation.
Such a move would resolve nothing – Israel would still not be recognized by Muslim nations and would still face existential foreign threats.
More importantly, Palestine is not governed legitimately; it’s in the midst of a civil war. Hamas won seats in parliament in Gaza and even if you think those results were legitimate, Hamas then expelled the Palestinian central government by force. Gaza succeeded from Palestine. How can such a place be made a state?
Obama was going to hope-and-change them over there with the whole region joining him in a kumbayah moment. Welcome to the real world Mr. President.
America didn’t create this problem, we’re the only force preventing all out war. The majority of Palestinians probably are being held hostage but not by Israel. The bad guys are the Islamist thugs of Hamas and Hezbollah – I doubt that the PLO has changed its stripes much either. The thugs are enabled and therefore partially directed by Iran and Syria.
We’d make more progress sooner if we stuck to the facts and dealt with root causes.
