Pit Bulls

There was another attack near here.  A 10 year old girl has been permanently injured.  Quick work by a deputy and a volunteer fireman probably saved her life.  The deputy shot and killed the dog then the fireman cut her loose from the dog’s chain that was wrapped around her neck.  They stanched her bleeding and created an impromptu landing pad so she could be flown to the local hospital.

This was the 6th Pit Bull attack in South Carolina since November.  Dogs kill 33 people a year and 70% of the kills are by Pit Bulls.  Over 25 years, there were 1,110 Pit Bull attacks violent enough to get reported to a hospital – 104 resulted in death and another 608 caused maiming.  The second most dangerous dog was the Rottweiler with 409 attacks.  All the other dangerous dogs had attack numbers well under 100.

It seems to me that local and state governments should regulate and license Pit Bulls – and probably Rottweilers too – in the same way we control pets such as wolves and lions and such.

Given the size-of-government arguments at the moment, I’d also like to say that we have absolutely no need of federal regulation of any kind.  We certainly do not need the same laws on a remote western ranch that we need in a crowded housing project.  A useful role for the feds would be data collection and reporting.
